Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is FGF5?-
FGF5 is a naturally occurring protein produced in the scalp. Its sole function is to regulate the hair growth cycle by taking hair that is actively growing into the transitional stage, stopping hair growth. Following transition, the hair will rest and then fall out. In 2014 a breakthrough study by scientists at Columbia University in New York confirmed FGF5 as crucial to limiting human hair growth, and showed that in the absence of FGF5 people grew excessively long hair.
The excess hair fall seen in hair loss is the result of a shortened growth phase. Évolis® inhibits FGF5, so extends the period of active growth and prevents excessive hair fall.
2. How does évolis work? +
évolis® blocks FGF5, the signal that triggers hair to stop , keeping your hair growing longer, faster and thicker. Published scientific studies have demonstrated évolis® has proven clinical efficacy in helping to treat hair loss and promoting hair growth.
Each évolis® tonic is made in Australia and clinically tested to the highest pharmaceutical standards to ensure the highest standards of quality are upheld to treat hair loss. .
3. Does évolis® tonic treat hair loss? +
Yes, multiple clinical and scientific studies have demonstrated the technology behind évolis® lead to a 75% reduction in hair loss and a 40.2% increase in the number of growing hair follicles compared to a placebo treatment in 4 months..
4. Why is évolis a breakthrough technology? +
There haven’t been any new clinically validated topical hair loss treatments in the nearly 30 years since Minoxidil-based products first appeared on the market. Breakthrough scientific studies at Columbia University have since validated the protein FGF5 is the key regulator of the hair growth cycle. Blocking FGF5 represents a radical new way to promote hair growth and help treat hair loss.
Advangen has developed évolis®, the first and only product that blocks FGF5; the body’s signal to stop hair follicles growing
5. What are the key benefits of évolis?+
évolis® contains natural active ingredients that have been shown to inhibit FGF5 in laboratory studies. FGF5 is a naturally occurring protein which builds up in the scalp; it’s only known role is to signal the hair follicles to stop growing. When hair follicles stop growing, they rest and then fall out. évolis® helps reduce hair loss and hair fall, which leads to reversing thinning, and longer, thicker, healthier hair.
6. Will évolis work for me? +
All types of common hair loss is the result of an irregular hair growth cycle. Hair usually grows in three stages: ANAGEN, a period of active growth which lasts between 2-7 years, followed by CATAGEN, a period of transition when the hair stops growing and the follicle gets ready to ‘hibernate’, followed by TELOGEN, a period of rest when the follicle is dormant. The follicle will eventually release the old hair shaft and it will fall out.
After dormancy, the follicle regenerates and the cycle begins again when a new hair starts to grow actively. If the hair growth cycle becomes irregular, less hair is in active growth stage, hair stays in the dormant stage for longer, and more hair falls out, resulting in thinner hair. FGF5 is a naturally occurring protein made in the scalp which pushes hair from the active growth stage into transition. évolis® inhibits FGF5, so hair stays actively growing for longer. évolis® will help all types of hair loss where the hair growth cycle has been disrupted. This will include:
- Hair loss due to hormonal activity, menopause, childbirth
- Recovery from hair loss due to chemotherapy
- Hair loss due to illness, fever
- Hair loss due to stress and lifestyle
- Androgenic Alopecia or Male Pattern Baldness
- Female pattern hair loss
- Hair thinning due to aging
- Recovery from Telogen Effluvium
- Recovery from Anagen Effluvium
7. What about alopecia areata, totalis and universalis, as well as scarring alopecias?+
These types of alopecia are not caused by a disruption in the hair growth cycle. Alopecia areata, totalis and universalis are due to autoimmune disorder, where the body treats the hair as a foreign body and rejects the hair, resulting in hair loss.
Scarring alopecia (also known as cicatricial alopecia) can have a variety of causes including infection, inflammation, or can be due to heat damage. Scarring alopecia is often associated with itching, swelling, pain or burning, but can also have no symptoms at all. A common feature is that excess scarring causes the loss of the follicle pore. A dermatologist must treat these types of hair loss and often medication will be required. Once the underlying cause has been treated, évolis® can be used to help support hair growth and prevent buildup of FGF5 to ensure hair grows in the best possible environment. However, if a follicle has been completely lost or destroyed évolis® will not be able to get it back.
8. Is évolis tonic natural and animal cruelty-free? +
évolis® products are based on predominately natural ingredients and have not been tested on animals.
Each évolis® tonic is made in Australia and clinically tested to pharmaceutical standards to ensure the highest quality of each product for the treatment of hair loss and thinning.
9. How long do I need to use the products before I notice results?+
Ideally you will need to use évolis® for a minimum of around 16 weeks or 120 days to notice significant results of hair growth, though signs that évolis® is working can be seen much sooner. Results you can expect include:
- Less hair fall in the first 30 days of use
- Short fine hairs visible in thinning areas in 30-60 days of use
- Increased hair density in 90-120 days of use
- Fine, downy hair texture change to stronger, thicker hair texture in 120+ days of use.
10. What happens when I stop using évolis®?+
If you decide to stop using évolis®, the FGF5 inhibiting natural actives will no longer be present. Hair will slowly revert to the previous growth rate and growth cycle.
11. If I stop using évolis® will I experience excessive hair fall? +
If you stop using évolis® the naturally occurring protein FGF5 will begin to accumulate in the scalp and will slowly revert to previous levels. This is a gradual process and will not result in sudden hair fall. If you were experiencing hair fall and thinning before starting évolis®, your hair will eventually revert back to its previous state. It is recommended that you use évolis® as part of your regular hair routine to avoid FGF5 accumulating excessively in the scalp, keeping hair and scalp healthy and avoiding hair fall.
12. How long will one bottle last me?+
évolis® 50ml tonics contain approximately 120 applications and will last between 4-6 weeks based on recommended twice daily, morning and evening application. évolis® 300 ml 3 in 1 shampoos should last for around 10 weeks with regular use, usually every day or every second day.
13. How should I apply it for best results and how often?+
Use twice per day every day, morning and evening. Apply evenly to wet or dry scalp. Using the unique targeted applicator, touch the tip to one side on top of the scalp and slowly evacuate the applicator while moving it back and forth, working back from the front hairline towards the crown of your head. Repeat on the other side. An extra application targeting thinning areas, e.g. temples or crown, may also be beneficial. évolis® tonic dries very quickly and leaves no residue, leaving hair and scalp light and fresh, so it can be used pre or post styling, on wet, damp or dry scalp.
14. What are the key active ingredients used in the product?+
évolis® contains active ingredients that have been shown to block the hair loss protein, FGF5, in laboratory studies. évolis® harnesses natural botanical extracts including Sanguisorba officinalis (great burnet) Rosa multiflora (Japanese tea rose) and Swertia chirata (gentian herb).
15. Can I use évolis® with my normal shampoo and conditioner?+
Yes, évolis® tonic can be used in conjunction with regular shampoos, conditioners or other hair care products as a targeted scalp treatment. Although it is recommended that you use the accompanying évolis® 3 in 1 Shampoo as part of a complete hair care system to ensure maximum cleansing conditioning and volumising benefits for the hair. The évolis® 3 in 1 shampoo/volumiser/conditioners contain the same active ingredients as évolis tonics and a unique catch and release polymer to assist with volumising..
16. Where can I buy évolis®? +
évolis® products are available on online at evolisproducts.com.au or in pharmacy Australia wide. If your doctor or pharmacist recommends évolis®, you can purchase the tonics from the same locations.
17. What is the difference between the tonic for men and women?- +
évolis® works on the hair growth cycle by harnessing the activity of natural extracts that inhibit FGF5. FGF5 is a natural protein responsible for regulating the hair growth cycle in men and women, so both can safely and effectively use évolis®.
The underlying mechanism of action is the same in both the men's and women's tonics. The active botanicals that inhibit the FGF5 protein are in equal proportions. The difference is only in the fragrance, which do not constitute any discernible difference in the function of the product.
18. Is it suitable for all hair types?+
évolis® products are suitable for all hair types and will not affect the natural colour or texture.
19. What are the most common side effects of évolis®?-+
évolis® is a natural product with no known side effects. However, people who suffer from skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or sensitive skin may want to test the product to check for irritation and/or a dryness on the scalp.
20. Can I use évolis® if I have eczema, psoriasis or any skin condition?+
If you suffer from a skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis or sensitive skin we recommend you do a spot test to ensure no irritation occurs before proceeding with daily use of the product. If irritation should occur, cease using the product immediately and if symptoms persist consult your health care professional. If in doubt, please consult your doctor before using the product. Always read the label, use only as directed.
21. How old do I have to be to use évolis®? +
évolis® can be used at any age. évolis® works by inhibiting FGF5, a natural protein that is produced in the scalp which regulates the hair growth cycle and takes hair from the active growth stage into the transitional stage. Inhibiting FGF5 allows hair to stay in the stage of active growth for longer, resulting in less hair fall. Over time this results in increased hair density, increased hair length and improved manageability. Because évolis® has natural actives and antioxidants and no known side effects, it can be safely used to support the hair growth cycle at any age.
22. I don’t suffer from hair loss but I want longer hair. Will évolis® help? +
Yes, évolis® supports longer hair growth by accelerating the rate of growth by 20% and extending the active growth stage. Using évolis® tonic will result in longer hair, faster.
23. I am a minoxidil user how can I transition to évolis®? +
It is safe to transition from minoxidil based products to évolis, as both work on different mechanisms of action. évolis utilises a new safe technology, which directly targets the hair itself on the scalp, by blocking the ‘hair loss signal’ FGF5.
Minoxidil has a side effect of 'hair shedding' which causes more hair fall than usual for a few months after stopping its treatment. évolis can slow this hair shedding process so we recommend using évolis a month before stopping minoxidil treatment. You may still notice increase hair fall during this period until évolis re-establishes your natural hair cycle.
Unlike minoxidil based products, évolis does not have the side effect of hair shedding. Stopping treatment with évolis® will not result in extra shed hair. When you stop using évolis the hair may slowly realign with its previous cycle.
